My grandma approached me a few months ago, asking if I’d be willing to help her out on a mission trip to North Carolina. If you’ve ever had the chance to meet my grandma, you’d know that it’s literally impossible to say no to her. She is truly an incredible person and happens to be a Youth Minister at our church in Minnesota. I had been on CWHC once before and I remember it as being one of the best experiences of my life, so I was eager to participate again as a chaperone.
We crammed over 90 people from our parish onto 2 coach buses and hit the pavement. Our 24 hour tour eastward brought us down the spine of the country, and wound us around the Appalachian Mountains. I set a new personal record for most movies consecutively watched in one sitting, and also found that a gallon jug of water can be used as a luxurious and portable shower. Fast food and intense card games kept us occupied for most of the long haul. Upon arriving at the camp, we were greeted by an energetic team of people. CWHC is a unique medley of good music, prayer, laughter, and work. It’s really something that I wish everyone could experience.
Our particular work group was in charge of helping out the Servant Center. The Servant center is a transition facility for homeless veterans. We got to meet some incredible people, including a man named Frank, who was in charge of the grounds at the Servant center. Frank is really a testimony to the program, being that he was once a homeless veteran himself.
Overall, the trip was a great chance to get back to center. I gained a lot of great relationships and got a new perspective on the world. I’m going to take a lot away from the entire experience.
